Common Usage

How to Use the Scale Explorer

  1. Choose a root note and a scale type from the selectors above.
  2. The fretboard highlights every note in the scale — root notes are shown in green, other scale tones in blue.
  3. Click any highlighted note to hear it played with real guitar sounds.
  4. Switch between Note names and Intervals to see the scale degree of each note (R, 2, b3, 4, 5, etc.).
  5. Select a Pattern (1–5) to view box positions — useful for learning scales one section of the neck at a time.
  6. Press Play Scale to hear the scale played ascending then descending on the lowest string position.

Scales Included

The explorer covers 14 scales and modes: Major (Ionian), Natural Minor (Aeolian), Pentatonic Major, Pentatonic Minor, Blues, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Locrian, Harmonic Minor, Melodic Minor, Whole Tone, and Diminished. Each scale shows its full interval formula, the notes in any key, diatonic chords built from the scale, and typical genre usage.
